The Surprising Secret to Building Momentum

About The Episode

The smartest leaders get the most help.” Meet Ray Johnston, Senior Pastor of Bayside Church. In today’s episode, Johnston explains the surprising secret to building momentum-and it all begins with encouragement. When we understand the types of support needed, the gaps between our “challenge level” and our “support level,” and the most effective way to share vision, we’re on our way to momentum in the church.

Welcome to episode 104 of the Leaders in Living Rooms podcast, with Sean Morgan.

Regaining momentum after a decline

  • If you’ve been in a decline–you’re not alone. That is the norm.
  • Rebuilding is harder than building.
  • Nothing great happens through you until it first happens in you.
    • Are you encouraged?
    • Encouragement > hope > dreams > fresh vision > momentum for the future
  • Look at people instead of empty seats.

Levels for encouragement

  • The gap between your challenge level and your support level is your level of destructive stress.

Types of support you need as a pastor

  • Emotional support
  • Friend support
  • Board support
  • Thinking support
  • Financial support

The smartest leaders get the most help.

People are starving for support. They just don’t know it, or they undervalue it.

Thinking Support

  • Margin is the birthplace of clarity.
  • Introverts versus extroverts – find out what recharges you.
  • Learn how to get perspective from others.

Two kinds of vision

  • Vision I share
  • Vision that is shared (this one fuels momentum)
