Insights from Jenni

CULTURE

  • Who are we and how we work together to achieve our mission
  • We rarely spend time defining our culture
    • If you haven’t defined your culture, you don’t know what “healthy” is.
  • Key ingredients for a healthy culture
    • Clarity on how we work together
    • Trust
    • Connection/belonging

TOOLS FOR MEASURING CULTURE

  • Getting a pulse on your culture is challenging
    • You’re likely seeing the best of the culture, and your team is seeing differently
  • Tools will never tell you the full story
    • Use the assessment, but include additional “pulse points” for a holistic view

COURSE CORRECTING TIPS

  • Regularly get a pulse point on culture (annually or bi-annually)
  • Elders should be seeing exit reviews from key staff members leaving
  • Annual review of pastor with direct reports

TEAM + FAMILY?

  • The church body is a family. The church staff is a team. It’s important to keep this distinction, and it’s challenging!

“FIXING” IT

  • There’s humility in realizing something is not right.
  • It’s rarely 100% a reflection of the leader.
  • Culture really needs a system to protect it.
  • Don’t bear all the weight, but feel the responsibility to lead through it.
  • You can’t assign “culture” to one person.
    • Don’t just delegate it if it’s broken.
