Insights from Bert
- Plant Where You Know the People, Not Just the Place
Bert’s two decades of ministry in Long Island weren’t marked by flashy growth—but by deep-rooted faithfulness. Serving in his hometown meant he could speak the language of the people and build genuine trust. His advice: if possible, plant where you already understand the culture. - Faithfulness Isn’t Measured by Scale
We often equate success with size. But Bert reminded us that God’s definition of faithfulness shows up in quiet places, small sacrifices, and everyday obedience. The “legends of heaven,” as he calls them, might be serving in small towns with little applause but great impact. - Healing and Leadership Can Coexist
Bert spoke vulnerably about leading through a divorce—a season marked by shame and self-doubt. His healing journey, supported by elders and a trusted brotherhood of pastors, became a testimony of God’s grace. “You are not your role,” he says. “You’re God’s beloved. Period.” - Pace Matters: Lead with a Non-Anxious Presence
Instead of sprinting, Bert now leads slowly and deliberately, building rest and margin into his weekly rhythm. “The greatest gift a pastor can give their church is a non-anxious presence,” he says. It’s a call to prioritize soul health over hustle. - Preaching is a Craft Worth Honing
Bert is passionate about preaching—not just as a Sunday obligation, but as a sacred craft. His coaching ministry, The Preacher’s Lens, helps pastors create margin, reduce stress, and get honest feedback so they can grow. “Healthy things grow,” he says. “And passionate things get better.”
