Insights from Joel
Leaders are developed one at a time.
Joel emphasized that leadership development isn’t mass-produced—it happens “life on life.” His own growth was shaped by mentors like Andy Stanley, who took the time to invest personally and offer stretch opportunities.
Being believed in changes everything.
One of Joel’s most defining leadership moments came when Andy told him, “You were worth it”—even after a failed initiative. That belief built confidence and underscored the importance of valuing people over performance.
Turnaround vs. realignment matters.
At Mission Community Church, Joel led through a turnaround. Back at Buckhead Church post-pandemic, he recognized the need wasn’t a turnaround but a realignment. Diagnosing the right problem is half the solution.
Know your strengths—and your blind spots.
Joel described himself as an “invention + galvanizing” leader, quick to create ideas and rally people. But he’s learned the necessity of surrounding himself with discerning teammates who can evaluate ideas and spot subtle misalignments.
Succession goes beyond the senior leader.
Preparing churches for the future isn’t only about the lead pastor role. Joel stressed the importance of transitioning executive leaders, staff, and lay leaders into the next generation, while equipping the congregation to embrace change.
Cohorts and community matter.
Joel gave a heartfelt endorsement of Sean’s leadership cohorts, calling them the single most important factor in his leadership development over the past decade. Growth happens best in an intentional, others-focused community.
