About The Episode

This conversation is a candid and practical guide for leaders who want to build thriving churches while staying deeply rooted in Christ.

Welcome to Episode 143 of the Leaders in Living Rooms Podcast with Sean Morgan.

Insights from Danny

  1. Soul care is leadership care.
Danny emphasizes that the most important work a pastor does is becoming the person God has called them to be. Numbers, growth, and milestones matter, but they should never outweigh the condition of a leader’s soul.
  2. Growth can’t define your identity.
It’s easy for pastors to attach their worth to attendance, baptisms, or influence. Danny practices Sabbath to remind himself that he is God’s beloved son apart from his work.
  3. Guard your relationships wisely.
Isolation and loneliness in leadership are dangerous. Danny intentionally built a circle of trusted friends who know him beyond his role as pastor and hold him accountable in life and faith.
  4. Rest fuels leadership.
Rather than pushing harder, Danny discovered that better rest leads to better leadership. Practicing rhythms of Sabbath, sabbaticals, and healthy delegation allows him to lead with clarity, joy, and resilience.
  5. Leadership requires letting go.
Pastors must resist the “Messiah complex” of doing everything themselves. True growth comes from building teams, empowering others, and saying no to opportunities—even high-profile ones—in order to protect soul health.
  6. Growth isn’t the enemy—neglect is.
Danny reminds leaders that ambition to reach more people is godly. The danger isn’t big churches, but leaders neglecting their souls in the process. Healthy spiritual practices create the foundation for sustainable impact.
