Dan Reiland

The Lead Pastor & Executive Pastor Relationship

About The Episode

In this episode, Sean sits down with veteran executive pastor Dan Reiland, who served alongside John Maxwell and Kevin Myers for over four decades. Dan shares stories from his journey, from “breaking” John Maxwell’s internship to helping lead one of the largest churches in the U.S., and offers wisdom for both lead and executive pastors navigating partnership, trust, and longevity in ministry. Sean and Dan unpack the key traits of great executive pastors, the difference between equipping and developing, and the vital role prayer plays in church leadership.

Welcome to Episode 146 of the Leaders in Living Rooms Podcast with Sean Morgan.

Insights from Dan

  1. Three Unique Traits of Great Executive Pastors
Dan outlines three defining marks of highly effective executive pastors:
  • Navigating authority and submission – learning to lead confidently while honoring the authority of the lead pastor.
  • Embracing obscurity over notoriety – thriving behind the scenes and finding joy when others get the credit.
  • Focusing in a non-focused job – managing rapid shifts in responsibility without losing clarity or composure.
  1. The Power of Trust and Mutual Submission
At the heart of every strong lead/executive pastor relationship is trust—trust deep enough for honesty, free of hidden agendas. Dan describes how he and Kevin Myers practiced mutual voluntary submission, creating a partnership built on character, competence, and open communication.
  2. Equipping vs. Developing Leaders
Equipping is transactional—teaching people skills to serve in ministry. Developing is transformational—investing in who they’re becoming. Dan urges churches to do both if they want to build legacy-level impact.
  3. Insecurity Undermines Leadership
Leaders can’t truly develop others if they’re ruled by insecurity. Dan reminds listeners that there’s a difference between being an insecure leader and simply having insecure moments. Growth happens when we acknowledge the difference and keep leading through the unknown.
  4. Friendship in Ministry Matters
Though some prefer purely professional relationships, Dan believes friendship deepens trust and spiritual alignment. His long-term partnerships with John Maxwell and Kevin Myers were marked by shared prayer, mutual care, and intentional cultivation.
  5. The Role of Prayer in Leadership
Dan concludes that prayer—not just systems or strategy—is the most essential work of an executive pastor. “Nothing is more powerful than when we pray,” he says. “That’s what grows the church.”
