The Pitfalls of Leadership

About The Episode

In this episode of Leaders in Living Rooms, Sean Morgan sits down with author, counselor, and leadership mentor Chip Dodd to unpack the “Five Pitfalls of Leadership.” Drawing on decades of experience leading leaders and running the Center for Professional Excellence, Chip explores how work can become confused with worth, why performance often overshadows presence, and how leaders slip into isolation and secrecy. He unpacks the role of humility, healthy dependency, and vulnerability in sustaining authentic leadership—reminding us that leaders must remain learners to stay effective.

Welcome to Episode 140 of the Leaders in Living Rooms Podcast with Sean Morgan.

Insights from Chip

1. Your Work Is Not Your Worth

One of the earliest and most dangerous shifts in leadership is tying your identity to what you produce. When leaders start valuing themselves solely on their output, they become “human doings” rather than “human beings.” This mindset makes it harder to admit need, ask questions, or acknowledge struggles—and it’s the first step down a slippery slope.

2. Presence Matters More Than Performance

Chip warns that when performance overshadows presence, leaders begin to value their last win more than the relationships they’re building. The role of “mom” or “dad” starts to take a back seat to titles like “doctor” or “pastor.” Healthy leadership requires being fully present with people, not just delivering results.

3. Avoid the Trap of Seeing People as Objects

When leaders burn out or disconnect from their own needs, people can start feeling like interruptions or problems to be solved rather than human beings to be known. This transactional mindset erodes trust and authenticity over time.

4. The True Self Thrives in Connection

A leader’s “true self” is designed to ask, seek, and knock—to be in relationship with others and with God. When leaders isolate, hide behind pride, or stop seeking input, their effectiveness and emotional health decline.

5. Secrets Signal a Deeper Problem

Chip explains that secrets aren’t just about big moral failures—they can be anything you hide from those who have the right to know. Secrets thrive in environments where leaders feel they must protect their image at all costs. Left unaddressed, secrecy can lead to burnout, relational breakdown, or moral collapse.

6. Dependency Is Strength, Not Weakness

Whether it’s the military, ministry, or business, the strongest leaders are those who depend on others. Jesus modeled perfect dependency on the Father—leaders today are called to follow His example, replenishing themselves so they can genuinely serve others.

7. How to Step Out of the Pitfalls

Chip offers three simple but profound steps for recovery:

  • Feel your feelings – Name what’s really going on inside you.
  • Tell the truth – Share honestly with someone outside your “mission” who can give wise counsel.
  • Practice neediness – Build a trusted “circle of security” where you can be fully known and supported.

8. Strategy Matters—But Mission Comes First

Plans, strategies, and systems are important, but they must be driven by the right “what for.” Without a God-sized mission at the center, even the best strategy can drift into self-serving territory.
